Supporting older people who are living in poverty

Our *grants service* provides older people who are in financial crisis with a lifeline of support.

The people who use our grants service are often:

  • living alone
  • have no where else to turn
  • feeling anxious
  • experiencing depression
  • isolation and/or loneliness

In 2020/21 we supported 587 individuals with grants worth £193,893, including:
· Replacing 73 dangerous or obsolete ovens
· Sourcing 57 washing machines, giving people the basic dignity of clean laundry
· Helping 48 older people to heat their homes
*Supplying 24 home disability adaptations to protect people from needless injuries

Plus, we spent 42% more on digital connection themed grants in 2020/21 compared to the previous year
to help combat isolation and loneliness”

Thanks to the generosity of The Edward Gostling Foundation every penny we raise for our grants service is matched, up to a value of £100,000, so your donation will have twice the impact.

"Getting money for transport to the hospital was my priority. I restrict myself as much as I can; I cut down on the use of water by having just one
major shower per week, I have no washing machine, I use a bucket with cold water as a fridge. I am not normally a person who asks for help but
I was stuck. The grant relieved my stress and worry.”

Harold, 69

Dementia friendly activities

We aspire to give older people the opportunity to live fulfilled lives. Our caring services provide an exceptional level of care but also help older people stay connected with their community and further their hobbies and interests, including arts and crafts, gardening and intergenerational fun.

Recently, our new digital activity tables, which host online concerts, virtual and sensory games, video calling to relatives, disability-friendly quizzes, and reminiscence exercises, have been a welcome addition and one we wish to introduce to more of our services if we can raise more funds.

“The Rainbow Table has definitely improved our resident’s overall wellbeing and it brings an added level of quality, engagement and interaction to their day. For our residents living with dementia, the Table’s sensory games, reminiscing and relaxation applications are helping to keep them mentally active and stimulated. It’s lovely to see the joy it brings.” John Tuazon, Friends of the Elderly Dementia Champion”

Protecting residents and care staff

Our care homes provide a caring, community-driven place to call home, with nursing and dementia services on site and all run on a not-for-profit basis.

We are part of the frontline fight against the Covid-19 pandemic and go beyond the guidance set out by Public Health England to reduce the risks of transmission and offer comfort and confidence to residents and family members:

  • PPE changes after every one-time interaction with residents
  • PPE usage in our homes currently running at five times normal levels
  • Visiting cabins for family
  • Working bubbles separated by floor
