Community Services: Bradbury Centre

The Bradbury Centre. A crucial dementia resource centre for people in Woking and the surrounding areas.

The Bradbury Centre augments our services in the Woking area and provides much needed facilities for those with dementia.

The centre includes a base for our Woking Home Support Service, a Day Club run in partnership with Woking Alzheimer's Society, an office for Advocacy in Action and amenities to support a range of professionals and carers. We have recently established a dementia resource library providing books, information and activities for lending to people with dementia and their carers.

'Friends with Dementia' pilot project

The Bradbury Centre will also be the home of our new Friends with Dementia project being run in conjunction with Surrey County Council and Surrey Primary Care Trust.  This pilot project will:
  • Provide simple and accessible information about dementia and the services available locally, to support people with dementia and their carers.
  • Establish peer support groups separately for those with dementia and for their carers. These will include local groups for members of the local Asian British community.
  • Establish online social network forums to extend the capacity for 24hr peer support.
  • Employ an outreach worker and volunteers from relevant cultural backgrounds.
  • Direct service users to support services for people with dementia already available in the area, including home support, day care, dementia café, social events and advocacy.
  • Develop a drop-in resource library with internet access on-site as well as books, DVDs and activities to use at home.
  • Provide direct access to local commissioners to influence the development of services in their local area.

Building work on the Bradbury Centre began in Summer 2006 and our Woking Home Support Service were the first to move in on the 4th June 2007.
We would like to thank the major funders which enabled us to complete this important development.  They include: The Bradbury Foundation, The Big Lottery Fund and The Bernard Sunley Foundation.
