Diane and Terry recently took part in Any Old Irons, part of our Football Friends programme. Any Old Irons reconnects older West Ham United fans through their love of the club. It also teaches participants digital skills to help them stay in touch with each other, the club and friends and family.
Diane told us: “We live in Beckton now, but I was born in Essex and I’ve always been a West Ham supporter – my Dad was, and our eldest son is too.
We’ve both given up working now. I go to art and craft classes – that’s where I first heard about Any Old Irons, my friend Eileen who is a volunteer goes to the craft classes too – but Terry is a real home person.”
Connecting through football
Terry said: “It’s true that I don’t go out that much – I wouldn’t have come normally to something like this, but it’s the football that gets you interested – it makes you think I will go and give it a try!”
Diane continued: “There is a really nice atmosphere and the people are really nice. I have enjoyed every week we’ve been; listening to the speakers and sharing memories – it’s nice to talk about going to matches at West Ham’s old ground, but we especially enjoyed going on the boat trip that was organised down the River Lee.”
Staying in touch
“We would like to try and keep in touch and come to the monthly sessions that other previous Any Old Irons participants go to. It’s nice to make friends and meet new people through the shared link with West Ham!”
